Dear District 124 Community and Family Members,
Unfortunately, I need to share news with you that the coronavirus has hit very close to home.
An extended family member of two Southwest School students has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently being treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center. This individual, on occasion, would drop the children off at Southeast School In the morning as part of a carpool situation. The last time this individual dropped them off was March 4. The students participate in a program at Southeast first thing in the morning. Our students are feeling fine and not exhibiting any symptoms. To err on the side of caution, the family has imposed a self quarantine and will keep Southwest Principal Mrs. Bogdan posted if the children develop any symptoms.
Minutes after hearing this news, I was notified that a Northwest School employee received a call today notifying the family that their child’s teacher, in a different community and school district, tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. This child and our employee are also fine and symptom-free at this time, and also monitoring for any symptoms.
Guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control dictate that we notify the community so that you may take whatever precautionary steps you feel necessary, and monitor your children should they develop any flu-like symptoms. From a confidentiality standpoint, I cannot share more information about either of these two situations; I will be working with both Mrs. Bogdan, as well as Northwest Principal Dr. Banach, to monitor each of these situations very closely.
Please know that, as we have been doing for the past week, the District will continue to provide updates regarding this ever-changing situation. We have posted a Frequently Asked Questions link on the District website that will give community members the opportunity to ask questions, and have their questions answered.
MAKE-UP DAYS: As of now, the Illinois State Board of Education is only requiring one day (Monday, March 16) to be made up, as Gov. Pritzker's order to close schools does not officially begin until Tuesday, March 17. We will no longer need a make-up day for March 17, despite having previously added a day to the calendar when canceling school for Election Day. With that said, the updated school calendar on the district website is still correct, and the last day of school will remain Monday, June 8.
Here's a brief look at the next few days ...
Monday, March 16: D124 families who do not have access to a device that will allow their student(s) to participate in E-learning days should pick up an iPad or Chromebook to use through the duration of the closure, at no cost, at the District Office between the hours of 9 a.m.-2 p.m. If you do not feel your student has access to the device they need at your home, please pick up a device at the District Office, regardless of how you responded to the District's survey.
Anyone receiving a District device on Monday will be required to sign an agreement taking responsibility for the care of the device. Only students' parents and guardians can sign out a device. If you are not able to make it during the the allotted time slot, please call the District Office at (708) 423-0950 to make other arrangements.
Tuesday, March 17: Staff members will come together to finalize the District's E-learning curriculum. Once complete, assignments will be posted on the District and school websites, and emailed to families. Papers copies of the curriculum will also be available on the District Office beginning Wednesday. If you do not have access to internet in your home, please pick up a paper copy of the curriculum.
Wednesday, March 18: This will be the first day of E-Learning in District 124. E-learning will continue through the remainder of the school closures. The Board of Education's scheduled meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the District Office. Also beginning Wednesday, the D124 Food Service Department will offer a grab-and-go bagged breakfast and lunch, free of charge, to anyone 18 and younger. Pickup will be available from 9-11 a.m. at Central Middle School, at door 13W off the parking lot on Spaulding Avenue.
I hope this information helps to eliminate any uncertainties our families are facing. If you have any questions, please submit them using the link above.
I will send out a note tomorrow to all families and staff regarding our e-learning plan. Thank you for your continued patience as we navigate these uncharted waters together.
Atentamente,
Dr. Robert Machak |
