D124 COVID-19 Testing Initiative:
Supporting Student and Staff Health & Safety
Evergreen Park School District 124 will soon begin offering optional COVID-19 testing to students and staff members who are displaying COVID-19 symptoms.
The testing initiative will begin on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Parents will be required to provide consent for students to be tested. This consent will allow the District to communicate directly with the child’s physician, as necessary. These forms can be accessed and completed through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you need help accessing the consent form, please review the instructions for accessing the form.
Families who do not wish to have their child tested should simply not complete the consent form. No student will be tested without a completed consent form.
The test that will be administered is the Abbott BinaxNOW antigen test, and it will be conducted using a nasal swab. The test is being sourced at no cost to the District or participants from the Cook County Department of Public Health, through the Illinois Department of Public Health.
All testing will be conducted by school nurses, who have completed training to administer the BinaxNOW test. Tests will be administered at the schools, with results available to participants in 15 minutes.
D124 has received a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments waiver from the IDPH that will allow the tests to be administered to staff and students with advanced parental permission, in compliance with state requirements and Abbott test administration directives.
Since antigen tests do not have the same level of accuracy as PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, it is possible that an individual can be infected with the COVID-19 virus but have a negative antigen test result. For this reason, both positive and negative results will prompt referral to the individual’s physician. In the case of a positive result, the physician would be best suited to direct a treatment plan and possible additional COVID-19 testing.
In the case of a negative result, the individual would be referred for a medical consult about the potential treatment for the contributing symptoms.
Though not a PCR test, it is important to emphasize that this antigen test was developed by the highly regarded Abbott Laboratories and has been deployed very successfully across the nation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

El Distrito Escolar 124 de Evergreen Park próximamente comenzará a ofrecer pruebas de COVID-19 a los estudiantes y miembros del personal que muestren síntomas de COVID-19.
La iniciativa de las pruebas iniciará el martes 16 de febrero de 2021. Los padres deberán dar su consentimiento para que se pueda administrar la prueba a los estudiantes. Este consentimiento permitirá que el Distrito se comunique directamente con el médico de e/la niño(a) en caso necesario. Pueden acceder a estos formularios y contestarlos a través del Portal para los padres PowerSchool Parent Portal.
La prueba que se administrará es la prueba de antígeno Abbott BinaxNOW, y se realizará con un hisopo nasal. La prueba no implica ningún gasto para el Distrito ni para los participantes del Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de Cook, a través del Departamento de Salud Pública de Illinois.
Todas las pruebas serán realizadas por enfermeras de la escuela, que han sido capacitadas para administrar la prueba BinaxNOW. Las pruebas se realizarán en las escuelas y los resultados estarán disponibles para los participantes en 15 minutos.
El D124 ha recibido una responsiva con las Enmiendas de Mejoramiento del Laboratorio Clínico del IDPH que permitirá que las pruebas se administren al personal y a los estudiantes con el permiso por adelantado de los padres, de conformidad con los requisitos estatales y las directivas de administración de pruebas Abbott.
Dado que las pruebas de antígeno no tienen el mismo nivel de precisión que las pruebas de PCR (reacción en cadena de la polimerasa), es posible que una persona pueda estar infectada con el virus COVID-19, pero tenga un resultado negativo en la prueba del antígeno. Por esta razón, tanto los resultados positivos como los negativos darán pie a una referencia al médico de la persona. En el caso de un resultado positivo, el médico estaría mejor capacitado para dirigir un plan de tratamiento, y posibles pruebas adicionales de COVID-19.
En el caso de un resultado negativo, la persona sería referida para una consulta médica sobre el tratamiento potencial para los síntomas presentes.
Aunque no es una prueba de PCR, es importante enfatizar que esta prueba de antígeno fue desarrollada por Abbott Laboratories y se ha implementado con mucho éxito en todo el país, en respuesta a la pandemia de COVID-19.
