April 8, 2020
Dear Boston College Graduates of 2020:
I know that many of you have been wondering if Commencement will take place on May 18, given the continuing threat of the coronavirus and various health and safety restrictions. It is now clear that this event cannot take place as scheduled, which I realize will be a major disappointment for you, your families, and the entire Boston College community. Like you and so many others, I very much regret that we will not have Commencement next month. However, diplomas for all eligible to graduate will be awarded effective May 18, 2020.
The University cannot set a definitive date for a fall graduation at this time because of uncertainties about travel and prohibitions on large gatherings. But it is focusing on the weekend of October 9-11, 2020, the overwhelming favorite of approximately 1900 seniors responding to a recent survey. Vice President for Student Affairs Joy Moore will lead planning efforts for such Commencement activities as the Senior Toast, Commencement Ball, graduation ceremony, and school diploma conferrals. In addition, school deans and other University leaders will be considering ways of celebrating the achievements of graduate and professional students earning degrees this year.
Though our 2020 Commencement will be deferred from its usual time in May, our intent is to have a memorable, joyful experience, one that recognizes the successes of graduates as well as the sacrifices and support of parents, siblings, spouses, and friends. I especially look forward to another Boston College graduation, this time in the fall.
Sincerely,
William P. Leahy, S.J. President Office of the President 140 Commonwealth Avenue Chestnut Hill, MA 02467
