GOVERNMENTS SHOULD BACK DECARBONISATION RESEARCH FUND Responding to a call from the UN Secretary-General for “urgency and ambition” on climate change, a group of global shipping industry organisations is giving “full and unequivocal” backing to a moon-shot proposal submitted by governments, to catalyse the complete decarbonisation of maritime transport by deployment at scale of zero-carbon ships within a decade.

SHELL DELIVERS FIRST CARBON-NEUTRAL LNG Shell Global LNG has taken the first ever carbon neutral liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo in Europe. QATAR LEADS NEW GAS CARRIER DESIGN PROJECT Qatar Petroleum and several international LNG players, including LNT Marine, ABS, and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) have signed a multi-party agreement with to collaborate on the development of new medium and large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier designs. "K" LINE PROMOTES CARBON NEUTRALITY Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha ("K" Line) is to establish a new department focusing on businesses and projects for carbon neutrality including renewable energy.
SHELL TANKERS TO RUN ON GAS BY 2023 Shell has signed agreements to charter 10 new VLCCs powered by dual-fuel LNG engines; four from Advantage Tankers, three from AET and three from International Seaways. BIMCO AND RINA BACK ALTERNATIVE CARBON BIMCO and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects have proposed an alternative method to determine an accurate reference speed in connection with IMO's carbon reduction framework.
NEW GAS TANKER JV REACHES FRUITION The previously-announced merger between Epic Gas and Lauritzen Kosan, the gas carrier division of J Lauritzen, creating a new entity known as BW Epic Kosan has now been legally finalised, subject to an EGM on the 24 March. DEFERRED DRYDOCKINGS IMPACT HULL EFFICIENCY Marine coatings company Nippon Paint Marine reports that it is seeing liner operators increasingly postpone dry-dockings as they look to keep vessels operational to meet the recent surge in demand for container shipments.
