Notice to Members Diagnostic imaging update Dear Colleagues,
As previously announced, on March 31, 2020, the Minister of Health proceeded with the decision to eliminate public funding for diagnostic imaging ordered by chiropractors, physiotherapists and audiologists. At that time, it was not clear if that elimination of public funding extended to diagnostic imaging ordered at Alberta Health Services (AHS) facilities.
Last night, we received confirmation that the elimination of public funding extends to imaging conducted at AHS facilities. Public funding of diagnostic imaging ordered by chiropractors, physiotherapists and audiologists has been completely eliminated.
To be clear: the elimination of public funding does not impact your ability to order diagnostic imaging. However, it is now the patient’s responsibility to pay for that imaging.
I understand that both the elimination of funding and the lack of clarity until now has caused frustration. It is equally frustrating for the ACAC. Advocating the value of funding diagnostic imaging ordered by chiropractors has had the ACAC’s complete focus since November 30, 2020. The facts of this case were presented to government—however, it became clear that those facts didn’t matter in the government’s final decision.
Moving forward, we are focusing on three initiatives:
More details will be shared on these initiatives as they develop. These initiatives will require active engagement of members, so please participate as opportunities arise. It will take the ACAC and the membership working together to achieve these goals for patient care.
Last but not least, I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who reached out to their MLA and the Minister on this issue. It was incredibly important to have you engaged in this advocacy on behalf of your patients. Please rest assured that this issue remains a priority.
Sincerely, Sheila J. Steger CEO |
