InTouch: Association news August 2020 President's message
Dear Colleagues,
The summer is passing quickly and Council elections are already well underway. By now, each member should have received an email from Simply Voting, detailing how they can participate and vote for their preferred candidate. All candidates have put time and effort into answering your questions leading up to the election—I urge you to get to know them, their platforms and how they plan to add to Council and lead the profession. Now more than ever, chiropractic in Alberta needs strong, collaborative leadership as we continue to move forward in the pandemic. Please vote as soon as you’re ready, as the election process concludes on August 31 and the results will be announced the next day. Thank you in advance for your participation and good luck to all our candidates!
Speaking of participation, registration for the first virtual AGM opened on August 13. We are looking forward to hosting members virtually in this abridged format. In light of the virtual format of the AGM, the entirety of the meeting has been condensed into two hours. Members were notified on August 13 that the AGM package containing the agenda, pre-circulated resolutions, voting instructions and more is now available on the ACAC website.
One new addition to the AGM is the opportunity for members to submit questions in advance for Council’s response. You can find out more and add your questions to the ThoughtExchange through the article below. Regardless of whether you participate in the ThoughtExchange or not, I hope you will join us for the ACAC’s first virtual AGM and that you find it informative and enjoyable.
Lastly, please rest assured that Council continues to advocate for the profession and lead us through the pandemic. We are encouraged by the positive feedback we receive from members, patients and the public alike and hope you also feel encouraged, too. The new normal must include safely delivered chiropractic care for Albertans. The efforts you take now in masking and sanitizing properly help uphold the public trust in chiropractic as a profession that puts patients first.
Thank you, Dr. Brad Kane President
Relaunch grant for business impacted by COVID-19 The Government of Alberta just introduced the "Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant," which offers financial assistance to Alberta businesses that were impacted by the orders to close or curtail operations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Application intake will close August 31 or four weeks following the start of Phase 3 of Alberta's Relaunch Strategy—whichever is later.
Join us for our first ever virtual AGM! The ACAC is pleased to host our first ever virtual AGM on September 20, 2020. In consideration of the gathering restrictions COVID-19 has brought, Council decided to transition the event to a virtual format to allow members the opportunity to come together in a safe way.
A condensed version of the AGM will be offered from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. You will hear from the President, CEO and Registrar, be able to vote on resolutions, hear Council's answers to your top 10 voted-on questions and more.
Because of the virtual format of this event, registration must be completed in advance. Unlike typical AGMs, you will not be able to register for the event day-of. It’s important that you register before September 14 or you will be unable to attend the AGM.
What questions do you have for Council? The last year has been an eventful one and now the ACAC’s first virtual AGM is coming up. While we are working to keep the meeting concise and informative, we realize that members won’t have the same opportunity to speak with each other and connect with Council like they usually would at an in-person AGM. That’s why we are running a ThoughtExchange to provide members an opportunity to ask Council questions and hear about Council activity over the past year.
The top ten questions, as voted by the membership, will be answered at the AGM. We recommend that you submit open-ended questions related to the past year of ACAC and Council activities.
You can submit your questions and vote on other people’s questions until August 28 at 5 p.m. To allow time to review the questions and prepare replies, the ThoughtExchange will close at that time.
Thank you in advance for your participation!
ACAC pivoting member support efforts Thank you to everyone who participated in last month’s poll on your interest in the Toasty Toes Sock Drive continuing as a fundraising-initiative only. Unfortunately, we did not receive enough interest for us to continue the sock drive.
While we thank everyone for their commitment to this cause over the years, this campaign did not gain enough traction so we're pivoting our efforts to ones that will have a broader provincial impact. Moving away from managing the Toasty Toes Sock Drive will allow the ACAC to focus our efforts on more direct member supports going forward.
Over the years, the ACAC has seen clinics and their communities come together to provide a growing number of warm, clean socks to Alberta’s most vulnerable and we encourage you to not lose that momentum. Although the sock drive will no longer be overseen by the ACAC, we encourage members to continue supporting their communities with the sock drive as a clinic-only initiative.
CCGI patient resources CCGI has several useful resources to share with your patients, including exercise videos, evidence-based handouts, mental health resources and information on pain management.
ACAC blog: five steps to identify and eliminate headache triggers In our latest blog post, Dr. Jillian McKinnon explained the important role that diet plays in headache management.
In this month's blog post, Dr. McKinnon will be outlining five key steps to tracking, identifying and eliminating headache triggers.
