Manufacturing USA Institute Leaders Call

For Creation of National Manufacturing Guard

Two Online Events Scheduled to Address National Manufacturing Ecosystem

IACMI members and members of other Manufacturing USA Institutes are invited to be among the first U.S. manufacturing leaders to learn about a new, bold call for the creation of a “National Manufacturing Guard” designed to ensure a resilient and robust national supply chain and manufacturing base in the future.

Scheduled for Sept. 29 and October 1, the two identical online sessions will feature Institute leaders focusing on:

·    The formation of a National Manufacturing Guard
·    The establishment of a National Supply Chain Data Exchange
·    The formation of a Technology Corps
·    A Resilient Manufacturing Advisory Council

“The COVID-19 pandemic crisis response has shown the challenges for the U.S. manufacturing supply chain in meeting emergency and surge response needs,” IACMI CEO John Hopkins said. “Greater adaptability and resilience of the domestic manufacturing base is necessary for our national security and global competitiveness.”

National Manufacturing Guard Background
In response to the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on U.S. manufacturing, including the challenges uncovered related to the security and responsiveness of manufacturing supply chains in our country, the CEOs of all 15 Manufacturing USA Institutes have created a decisive set of strategies and recommendations, including calling for the creation of a National Manufacturing Guard. The Resilient Manufacturing Task Force Act, introduced in July by U.S. Sens. Chris Coons (Del.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.) and U.S. Representatives Haley Stevens (Mich.) and Troy Balderson (Ohio), similarly addresses these challenges and seeks to “reinforce the U.S. Supply Chain against future disruptions.”

COVID-19 Response & Recovery
Under the Institutes’ leadership, preeminent manufacturers in critical medical, food and consumer goods supply chains are contributing with leading technology providers and national political leaders on these efforts. Their input helped shape the creation of specific initiatives that will enable us to learn from the recent past and ensure we are aggressively working towards a much more resilient supply chain and manufacturing base in the future.

The bridge surface will have double 8 ft. x 25 ft. fiber reinforced polymer deck panels

Composites Bridge Project Named CAMX 2020 Award Finalist

CAMX has named the composites bridge deck system now underway in north central Tennessee’s Morgan County as a 2020 CAMX Award Finalist in the “Combined Strength” award category. The bridge is part of a public-private partnership aimed at demonstrating fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials, or FRPs, as a fast and easy sustainable solution for improving the thousands of structurally deficient rural bridges that plague financially strapped counties across the U.S.

The coveted CAMX award allows organizations and individuals to showcase groundbreaking achievements that have the potential to change the composites and advanced materials industry. CAMX will announce the award winners during the CAMX 2020 Virtual General Session on Tuesday, September 22 at 11:00 am ET.

Structural Composites, Inc. (SCI) submitted the bridge project for the CAMX award.“This project is an excellent example of the power of collaboration,” says SCI Scott Lewitt.

Lewit said the bridge project team includes IACMI, University of Tennessee Joint Institute for Advance Materials and Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility, Composites Application Group, McKinney Excavating, Luna Innovations, Interplastic Corp, Engineered Bonding Solutions LLC, AcraLock Engineered Solutions, West System, Superior Fiberglass, METYX Composites and Compsys, Inc., Neel-Schaffer Engineering and Dr. Robert Steffen. Tennessee Department of Transportation, Florida Department of Transportation, and Federal Highway Administration are monitoring this project and providing technical guidance as needed.
