Fall 2020 Virtual Members Meeting Recap
Thank you to the 360+ IACMI members, partners and guests who registered and participated in our Fall 2020 Virtual Members Meeting & Working Groups October 7-8, 2020. The two-day IACMI meeting featured high-level speakers, impactful panel discussions, breakout sessions and multiple working groups focusing on market-driven themes and advanced technology. In addition, participants took advantage of networking opportunities throughout the virtual meeting thanks to the dynamic online meeting platform. This was the first time for IACMI to conduct a “virtual” Members Meeting for its 150+ member and partner organizations due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

German-American Online Lightweighting Symposiums on Composites and Metals October 27 and October 29, 2020 9:00 am – 11:30 am EDT
In collaboration with the German-American Chamber of Commerce, IACMI is supporting a lightweighting symposium on composites on October 27. Dale Brosius, IACMI Chief Commercialization Officer, and Ray Boeman, IACMI & Michigan State University Scale-Up Research Facility Director, will present on IACMI and SURF capabilities. The conference is free to attend and will be held in English. The virtual Zoom conference, which is part of a delegation funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi),will provide important insights on latest trends and challenges in lightweighting technologies in Germany and the U.S., and offer a platform to engage with experts from both sides of the Atlantic. A second lightweighting symposium will be held on October 29 focusing on metals. Highlights:
- Learn about and discuss lightweighting solutions and trends
- Gain insights from the automotive and aerospace sectors
- Hear from German suppliers of innovative lightweight materials and equipment solutions
- Exchange best practices and innovative ideas
- Explore opportunities for transatlantic collaboration
Featured speakers for the Oct. 27 event include:
- General Motors’ Venkat Aitharaiju: “Composite Manufacturing Needs – An Automotive OEM’s Perspective”
- Aria Group’s Kevin Cain: “Opportunities and Challenges for Composites in the Advanced Air Mobility Market.

IMTS Spark – Moonshot Episode #2 Structural Dynamics for Concrete Base Machine Tool November 2, 2020 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM Eastern
When the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL) sets a bold goal —they call it a moonshot. IMTS Spark will witness a moonshot that can change the trajectory of the U.S. machine tool industry. The “launching pad” of this effort is a 3D printed machine tool base with damping that is an order of magnitude higher than traditional castings.
In the second episode of a four-part series, UT Engineering Professor and ORNL Joint Faculty Tony Schmitz shows how modal testing is completed using an instrumented hammer to excite the base and an accelerometer to record the corresponding vibration. This impact testing approach is used to identify the frequency response functions, or FRFs, for the polymer mold-concrete filled base. The FRFs are then analyzed to determine the: natural frequencies, modal stiffness values, modal damping ratios, and mode shapes. The concrete base damping ratios are compared to cast iron to demonstrate the increased energy dissipation for the concrete base. A team from ORNL will join Tony for a live Q&A session.

Careers in Composites: Building Today for the Future of Manufacturing November 10, 2020 2:00 – 3:00 pm ET
IACMI is teaming up with ACMA, Composites One and Davis Technical College for this webinar that will explore the many opportunities to work in the composites manufacturing industry. We will look at the products made of composites, and how employment opportunities are connected to their design, manufacturing, engineering and use worldwide. Included will be examples of career paths individuals have taken while pursuing composites careers. The possibilities continue to grow, and the webinar will also explore future opportunities as composites are vital to the future of growth both here and in travel beyond the boundaries of the earth. Speakers include Joannie Harmon, director of workforce at IACMI, James Jones, lead technical support sales manager at Composites One, Wes Hobbs, national director for Composites Pathways at Davis Technical College in Utah and Andrew Pokelwaldt, director of certifications at ACMA. This webinar is open to all individuals interested in learning more about the composites industry. Whether you’ve been working with composites and are looking for a new opportunity, or know someone who is, this webinar could be the next step you’ve been waiting for. Do you work with teenagers or young adults in youth programs or through a local school? This webinar will be geared towards all age levels and we encourage you to invite others who may be interested in kickstarting their career. Register Today!
