Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center of Excellence

at Purdue focuses on innovation using advanced composites

Dassault Systèmes launched its newest 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center of Excellence in Advanced Composites at Purdue University on October 28. The opening of the 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center at the Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center (CMSC) of Purdue underscores the Dassault Systèmes' commitment to academia community’s efforts to develop the workforce of the future.

No two organizations are more committed to accelerating that digital transformation than Purdue and Dassault Systèmes, whose seven-year strategic partnership has entered a new phase with the inauguration of the latest 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center. Dassault Systèmes is a charter member of IACMI.

Speaking during a virtual open house, Executive Vice President, GEO Managing Director, Americas Dassault Systèmes Erik Swedberg said, “it is extremely important that we develop a skilled workforce in North America to support the demand in the transformation of the industry. People will have to be relevant in their skillset and we need to act now. Industry and academia need to develop engagement models for students to be workforce ready by the time they graduate.”

Having offices inside the Indiana Manufacturing Institute located in Purdue research park will enable Dassault Systèmes to engage in collaborative activities with industry.

Dassault Systèmes saluted the work of Dr. R. Byron Pipes, the John L. Bray Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Purdue University for his distinguished work in the composites industry. Pipes has been at the leading edge of materials science worldwide for decades, and he foresees the language of innovation in our immediate future will be simulation. He is Executive Director of the CMSC at the Indiana Manufacturing Institute at Purdue and serves as IACMI’s technical director for design, modeling and simulation.

IACMI Chief Commercialization Officer Dale Brosius praised the efforts of Pipes and Dassault Systèmes Composites & Additive Manufacturing Director Rani Richardson for the successful launch of the 3D EXPERIENCE Education Center at Purdue.

"While much has been accomplished these last five years in establishing a great capability at Purdue, and starting to generate a simulation talent pipeline, we have untold opportunity to leverage these assets going forward to accelerate composites adoption across many industries,” Brosius said.

University of Tennessee annual Engineers Day

welcomes hundreds virtually

Engineers Day has been a day of celebration, learning, and camaraderie at the University of Tennessee for 108 years now. While this year it had to take on a different, fully virtual look, more than 1,000 students still registered for the day's competitions held online Thursday, October 29.

Participants enjoyed a keynote speech from Joel Seligstein, a 2006 graduate of the Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, aimed at inspiring students to engage in engineering and science in order to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

Former IACMI Intern Will Henken experiencing the highest level of academia while working for international company

If IACMI’s internship program had a poster child, William Henken could be it.

Now a doctoral student in the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s structural engineering program and, since January, a Volkswagen Fellow at the automaker’s Innovation Hub in Knoxville, Henken says his two stints as an IACMI summer intern — at Purdue University’s Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center in 2016 and, in 2018, with innovative ground mobility company Local Motors’ direct digital marketing and 3D printing “microfactory” in Knoxville — are why he is where he is today.
