CompositesWorld editor-in-chief to present on where composites markets, materials and processes are headed
IACMI's Winter 2021 Virtual Members Meeting, which kicks off February 16, will feature CompositesWorld editor-in-chief Jeff Sloan.
Sloan has been editor-in-chief of CompositesWorld since 2006 and manages all editorial content delivered through CompositesWorld’s digital, print, audio and video channels.
During his presentation, Sloan will discuss the forces and trends undergirding the composites industry and driving ongoing and long-term change that promise to outlive COVID-19. Discussions will review the current state of the composites industry and highlight material, process and other technology trends that promise to shape the future of composites fabrication.
Prior to his work at CW, Jeff was editor and then publisher of several publications serving the plastics manufacturing industry. Jeff is a graduate of Colorado State University where he earned his degree in technical journalism.
Our February 16-18 agenda will showcase more high-level speakers, panel discussions, project reports, and breakout sessions. Working Group meetings will focus on market-driven themes and advanced technology.

DOE announces up to $60 million for sustainable transportation research
The U.S. Department of Energy announced an investment of up to $60 million in funding for research and development of sustainable transportation resources and technologies.
Funded through DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) was issued on behalf of the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO).
The FOA supports priorities in materials, specifically including “Demonstrations of Lightweight Multi-Material Glider System" (pg. 24-26) and “Low-cost Infrastructure-based Enablers for Cooperative Driving Automation" (pg. 27-29).
The two-phased application process for the FOA will include a concept paper, due on February 5, 2021, followed by a full application due on April 7, 2021.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, partnering or have questions please contact IACMI Composites Manufacturing Consultant Cliff Eberle at eberlecc@iacmi.org.
Purdue Composites Design & Manufacturing HUB hosting webinar series featuring global composites experts
Purdue Composites Design & Manufacturing HUB (cdmHUB) invites you to a series of webinars presented by global composites experts. These webinars will examine the history, present capabilities, and future of composites science and technology, with the goal of sharing the vast knowledge of composites that has been developed over the past 50 years.
On Thursday, January 21, 2021 beginning at 11AM ET cdmHUB welcomes Professor Conchúr M. Ó Brádaigh, Chair of Materials Engineering and Head of the School of Engineering at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Professor Brádaigh will present on "Novel Power Epoxy Composites for Thick-Section Structures."
This seminar will discuss the ongoing work at The University of Edinburgh on the processing, design and testing of thick-section composites for industrial structures such as large wind and tidal turbine blades, via powder epoxy resin systems. Learn more here and register!
UT Knoxville Filament Tower still winning awards, showcasing new technologies When engineers and architects get together, there’s no limit to what kind of structures they can design.
In fact, a group of students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville brought their creative know-how together to build the first coreless wound filament tower in North America, and one of the tallest examples of coreless filament winding ever constructed.
The 30-foot lattice tower, which featured 3D-printed composite bases and 27 composite components, was awarded the Most Creative Application Award in Design at the American Composites Manufacturers Association Awards and was shown at Exhibit Columbus in Columbus, Ind., at its annual fall symposium. Reinventing the PPE supply chain in the face of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic created a ripple effect for U.S. manufacturers that revealed not only a lack of redundancy in the supply chain but also a lack of transparency.
As the pandemic took hold, it became apparent that the PPE supply chain in the U.S. would need reinventing.
Several Manufacturing USA institutes, including IACMI, are taking an expanded view on this challenge and are applying artificial intelligence, emerging fabric technologies and advanced manufacturing to ensure supplies and mitigate future risk. Read more here.
