Riki Nia Nia, Executive Director Māori, Equity and Health Improvement Tēnā koutou,
As we drop down in alert levels as a country it’s important for us to remember this does not mean we have totally eliminated the risks of COVID-19 from our shores. It’s important we encourage our whānau to remain vigilant and stick to the guidance to keep themselves and whānau safe, while supporting them to get on with the important daily functions of life.
Ngā mihi, Kia kaha te reo Māori me ngā reo katoa o te Pasifika!
Waikato Pacific Youth Network To Strengthen Pacific Language, Identity & Culture To be the voice of change for Waikato Pacific Youth Established in early 2018, the Waikato Pacific Youth Network (WPYN) is made up of different community and denominational youth groups around Hamilton.
The goals of WPYN are to:
Waikato Pasifika Youth Fono
The fono is an opportunity for Pacific youth to talanoa, voice issues and share experiences in a safe environment. A key part of the fono will look into our young people’s experiences during COVID-19 and how it has affected their wellbeing.
We will work together to identify the best ways of supporting and strengthening our young people including to enable them to access appropriate services for themselves.
The Youth fono will practise physical distancing, recording for contact tracing, encouraging wearing of masks and use of hand sanitisers.

At Waikato PHU we have 5 Medical Officers of Health overseeing the COVID-19 (and all the normal PHU business) response.
We have input into many spheres of COVID-19 work – primary care advice, CBAC operations, managed isolation facility oversight, case and contact management to name just a few. We also provide advice and gain updates on local (DHB), national, and international COVID-19 developments.
As for all of us in New Zealand – its been quite a busy year!
We have been lucky at Waikato PHU to have an experienced team and a strong equity focus. As recent sad events have shown us COVID-19 is a disease we must keep out of Aotearoa, and particularly out of our Māori and Pacific peoples. We need your ongoing help to achieve this. Please continue to:
Kia kaha
